Job Description
Responsibilities
Patient Triage and Assessment
- Assess and triage incoming patients based on the severity of their illness or injury following standardized triage protocols.
- Perform physical examinations, collect patient histories, and initiate
- appropriate care interventions.
- Prioritize patient care based on urgency and resource availability.
Emergency Care
- Provide emergency care and treatment to stabilize patients, including administering medications, IV fluids, oxygen, and other treatments.
- Assist physicians with procedures such as wound care, suturing, cardiac monitoring, and resuscitation.
- Monitor patients for any changes in condition and adjust care as necessary.
- Operate emergency medical equipment, including defibrillators, ventilators, and cardiac monitors.
Admitting Patients
- Assess patients for admission to the hospital and complete the admission process, ensuring that all paperwork and electronic records are accurate and up to date.
- Communicate effectively with admitting physicians, and other care team members to facilitate a smooth transition from the emergency room to the appropriate inpatient departments.
- Provide detailed handovers to the nursing staff in the admitting departments to ensure continuity of care.
Patient Education and Support
- Provide patient education regarding discharge instructions, medications, and follow-up care.
- Offer emotional support and reassurance to patients and their families during stressful situations.
Collaboration and Communication
- Collaborate with physicians, social workers, and other healthcare professionals to develop comprehensive care plans.
- Communicate patient information clearly and efficiently to ensure a coordinated approach to patient care.
- Serve as a liaison between patients, their families, and the healthcare team.
Documentation and Compliance
- Maintain accurate, timely, and thorough patient records in accordance with hospital policies and regulatory standards.
- Ensure compliance with all hospital and government regulations related to emergency and admission care.
- Participate in quality assurance and improvement initiatives aimed at optimizing patient outcomes.
Crisis Management
- Remain calm and efficient in high-stress situations, handling emergencies such as cardiac arrest, trauma, and respiratory failure.
- Provide leadership and support to other nursing staff during critical incidents or mass casualty events.
Safety and Infection Control
- Adhere to infection control guidelines to protect patients and staff from hospital-acquired infections.
- Ensure that all safety protocols, such as hand hygiene, PPE usage, and equipment sterilization, are strictly followed.
Requirements
Education
Registered Nurse qualification with a valid nursing license recognized by the Maltese council of nurses & Midwives.
Skills
- Post-registration experience in IMCU, emergency, urgent care, or acute clinical settings.
- Strong clinical assessment, triage, and decision-making skills.
- Advanced knowledge of emergency nursing procedures, patient stabilization, and acute care protocols.
- Proficiency in administering medications, IV therapy, and emergency interventions.
- Ability to operate emergency and monitoring equipment such as defibrillators, cardiac monitors, and ventilators.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with patients, families, and multidisciplinary teams.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills in fast-paced environments.
