Job Description

A Diagnostic Radiographer is responsible for producing high-quality medical images using X-Rays, MRI, CT scans, and other imaging techniques to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. The role requires a high degree of precision and care to ensure that images are clear, accurate, and useful for diagnosis while maintaining the safety and comfort of the patient.

Responsibilities

Perform Imaging Procedures:

  • Operate imaging equipment such as X-ray machines, MRI scanners, and CT scanners to produce high-quality images.
  • Ensure that all imaging is performed in line with established protocols and standards.

Patient Care:

  • Prepare and position patients for imaging procedures, ensuring their comfort and safety. o Explain procedures to patients, addressing any concerns or questions they may have.
  • Monitor patients during imaging procedures and provide assistance if needed.

Image Quality and Analysis:

  • Review images to ensure they meet diagnostic standards before sending them to radiologists or physicians for interpretation.
  • Adjust equipment settings and techniques to improve image quality if necessary.

Radiation Protection:

  • Adhere to radiation safety guidelines to protect patients, staff, and self from unnecessary exposure.
  • Use protective equipment such as lead aprons and shields where appropriate.

Documentation and Record-Keeping:

  • Maintain accurate records of imaging procedures, including patient information and details of the images taken.
  • Ensure all images are properly labelled and stored in the hospital’s Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS).

Equipment Maintenance:

  • Perform routine checks and maintenance on imaging equipment to ensure it is in good working order.
  • Report any equipment malfunctions or safety concerns to the appropriate personnel.

Collaboration:

  • Work closely with radiologists, physicians, and other healthcare professionals to provide accurate and timely diagnostic information.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and case reviews as needed.

Continuous Improvement:

  • Stay updated with the latest developments in radiographic techniques and technology.
  • Participate in ongoing training and professional development opportunities.

Compliance and Quality Assurance:

  • Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations, standards, and guidelines, including those set by regulatory bodies such as the Council for Professions Complimentary to Medicine (CPCM) or equivalent.
  • Participate in quality assurance programs to maintain high standards of practice.

Requirements

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Radiography, Medical Imaging, or a related field.
  • Certification or licensure as a radiographer as required by local regulations.

Experience:

  • Previous experience in a diagnostic radiography role is preferred but not always required for entry-level positions.

Skills:

  • Proficiency in operating imaging equipment.
  • Strong understanding of anatomy, radiology principles, and medical terminology.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Attention to detail and precision in imaging techniques.
  • Ability to work in a team and independently.
  • Commitment to patient care and safety.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand for long periods.
  • Ability to lift and move patients or heavy equipment as required.

Professional Development:

The Radiographer is expected to maintain ongoing professional development to ensure continued competence and compliance with regulatory and professional standards. This includes participation in mandatory hospital training, continuing education programs, and skills updates related to advances in imaging technology and radiographic techniques. The role requires maintaining valid professional registration and fulfilling continuing professional development (CPD) requirements as set by the Council for Professions Complimentary to Medicine (CPCM) or equivalent regulatory bodies. Active involvement in quality improvement initiatives, audits, and departmental training is encouraged to support best practice and high standards of patient care.
